Staging the Henrician Court : Early Tudor set design

The production designs of Tudor devices were extravagant and spectacular, as evidence from such sources as Hall's Chronicle and the Revels Office records reveal. Accounts of pageants like 'The Dolorous Castle' and 'The Rich Mount' (1512-3) or 'The Pavilon un the Plas Parlos' (1514-5) demonstrate huge expenditure but also an expectation of a set to perform multiple functions, have multiple locales and enable theatrical moments: for instance the magical appearances and disppearances of performers through the use of concealed spaces or curtains incorporated into the set.
